Would you let a 3 year old child run your life?

Would you let a 3 year old child run your life? – by Anthony M TurnerWould you let a 3 year old child run your life?

Chances are you do it every day. No, I’m not talking about parents or grandparents of or those who have had 3 year olds and who fully understand how demanding a 3 year old can be.

What I am talking about is the wounded 3 year old many carry around inside who often dictates what is safe and what is not for our welfare in adult life.

It is now well discussed and documented that our learning of coping strategies towards life are formulated in our early years – typically the first 5 years of life – where we make most of our life based decisions about safety, love and/or how to fit in. What’s also well discussed and documented is that most of us carry these early childhood based perspectives of the world through the rest of our lives.

So what’s this got to do with you as a business person?

If you had issues in your early childhood and most of us do (not necessarily because something bad happened to us but more often because something happened that we did not understand which we perceived as a threat to our safety and therefore ‘decided’ was bad) we set up a limiting belief about ourselves. This may be like a distant relative who was constantly told he was dumb in his preschool years. So took this persona to school and failed miserably. When he went to work as an apprentice carpenter, he was told he was good with tools – you guessed it, he became a top carpenter and a successful business person because this ‘limiter’ had been negated.

The opportunity you now have is to examine any limiting beliefs you might hold and find appropriate ways to negate them. Not sure what they are? Become aware of any of those little voices you hear when attempting something in your life or business – you know the ones…

  • Who do you think you are?
  • Why did I think I could do that?
  • I’m dumb or stupid
  • This always happens

…except this time, make a different choice about your response or ask different questions like…

  • How can I master this?
  • How can I do this differently? – Who can help me?
  • I’m not dumb, I just have to learn HOW to do this
  • Up until know his has happened BUT… (decide what has to be done differently)

So back to the original question – sort of…
